what is education for you?
For most people “Education is a right.” Well, it is, but only for those who are at the primary and secondary level. It wouldn't go through all the way til the tertiary level. How could it be a right when individuals who goes to college are not responsible enough and don’t have the attitude to learn, but instead, they go to college to enjoy the allowance that their parents give them, to experience another stage in life or merely just hang on there til they got bored with their life and leave schooling.
One of my professor had mentioned before in our class, that for women nowadays, college is a detour to be able to get a degree of M-R-S rather than actually finishing their course. They go to college, and try to fish a good and rich young man to marry her. I knew this happen to some other countries, like America. Ladies or women who get to college don’t have the main objective of finishing their degree, but their main objective in getting to college is to finish their M-R-S degree, and have a better living. Few of these would really want to study and finish what they had started.
Now, as i observe what is happening in my own community, i see the same situation. There are a lot of students, especially women who gets pregnant because they engage in pre-marital sex early without knowing the right way of contraception, and ended up marrying a guy, whom they thought would save her life. I don’t judge them because that is the life they had chosen to live, but what i don’t understand is, why do they have to waste money and time to do all these and just ended up a plain housewife. They can do better than that. They can finish a way more better man when they are done with their degree and have a battle with the real world.
I had been teaching for 7 years now, and as i observe each year, education has been deteriorating. Only few students give the right attitude towards studying. I, myself had been a student too. I got 3.0 as my grade, and i even got a failing grade of 5.0. but it wasn’t because i was so lazy to study, but because i did my best, but my best was still not the best that my professor had seen. I’ve accepted it as a defeat and at the same time as a challenge to me. Because i know, education is the only thing that will help me survive my struggle to have a better life.
Whenever, i see students in their midterm examination and/or final examination cheating, asking their seatmates or talking, i would look back to what i had done in my college and say “I’ve never done this!” Oh well, we all pass through the same stage in life but in different level. I’ve done cheating, but i made sure my professor would not catch me. But now, students would not mind at all whether the teacher scold them for cheating, or even call their name. They don’t give a dam, as long as they will be able to answer the examination. That I don’t understand too!
When i look forward and imagine these students 5 or 10 years from now, i pity them. i pity them, because i can see them regretting what they had done now because that’s what they ended up in the future. If only i could just tell them that education is important and they need it in their future without sounding like a nagging mom or a teacher scolding his/her student, then i would. Because i know i’m not doing this for my own good but for their own sake.
Indeed, education is a privilege. Not everyone is able to get to a degree with high honors and distinction, and few struggles to be able to obtain it. Thus, not everyone can’t get to college coz not everyone has parents who can send them to school and be able to afford the expenses. So, i hope students who are well enough to afford college to be serious of what they are trying to earn, for there is no turning back once you get into it, only regrets.
